In a time when peace prevailed around the world, a land called Virg flourished under the rule of a powerful king. As was the custom, each king was selected at the Tournament of Champions. A zealous demon from the Netherworld, desiring to dominate the human world, sent forth five phantoms to possess each contender in the fabled Tournament of Champions. The demon plotted to turn the contenders against each other where they would be defeated one by one. The king, along and unguarded, would then meet his gruesome fat at the hands of the triumphant demon. The phantoms swooped into the souls of the unsuspecting contestands... all except one. As one of the phantoms lunged into the chest of Durill, the most famous competitor in all the land, a sickening pain overwhelmed him. Durill fought vigilantly, and the phantom was soon destroyed. However, Durill, his mind poisoned during the encounter, collapsed in exhaustion. As Durill's life faded, his son Kerrel stood over his dying father. One thought ran wildly through Kerrel's mind... To avenge his dead father and destroy the evil demon by taking his father's place in the Tournament of Champions! It may sound almost exciting but it really is quite boring. Gameplay
The Gameplay in Battle Blaze is not by any means original. It is you're basic run-of-the-mill one-on-one arcade style fighter like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat but not as memorable. It's not very fun alone as the story mode is short and simple, but with friends it's a decent game. There are only 6 characters to choose from so don't expect long gaming sessions out of it. Each character has around 4 "special" moves which aren't too exciting and only two buttons on the SNES controller are even used. Wait did you just read correctly? Yep you sure did, there are only TWO buttons use in the game one for jumping and one for attacking. Now you understand my problem with this game. Despite what you just read, even with the lack of buttons, moves, and characters, this game actually proves pretty fun with a friend. There are plenty better fighting games but this one is still a good 25 minutes of enjoyment with a friend. So don't quit reading now because you thought this game was terrible, because it may be the cheesy, horrible looking graphics that make it funny and therefor fun, but it is still pretty fun. NOT ALONE THOUGH. It is boring alone.
Story
As I stated in the intro the story is not very exciting. There really isn't anything too exciting about it. The story mode is boring just going from stage to stage alone isn't too much of a thrill. Read the story from the intro and you can decide how you feel about it but as for me I think it's unoriginal, uninspired, and nothing to get excited about.
Music
The music in the game is repetitive but somehow calming and overall not too bad. It's not catchy or amazing but I personaly like it. There's not much to say about it.
Graphics
For a 1993 SNES game the graphics are awful. They are almost on par with Altered Beast a 1989 Genesis game. I expected more. Especially when pitted against the outstanding graphics of games like Mortal Kombat for the SNES it seems sad that the graphics are probably the worst aspect of this game.
Lasting Appeal
I'll make this short and to the point. Single player this game has little lasting appeal. Maybe a 2/10. With a friend I give it a 6/10 because I keep coming back to play it with my friends. I am a huge retro gamer though and I even play the story mode because I find playing bad games funny and amusing. The multiplayer honestly is pretty fun even to my friends who only enjoy good games.
Overall
Battle Blaze is fun to play with friends but not alone. I only recommend it if you have already acquired all of the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games on the SNES, or if you are a die hard retro gamer like me. It isn't too expensive and is a mediocre game when you are playing it with a buddy.
