Bowser is at it again, but this time he came prepared. With countless islands, brand new enemies, boss battles left and right, secrets galore, and trapping Yoshi eggs as well as capturing Princess Toadstool (Peach). It's understandable that Mario and Luigi may need a little help from their dinosaur friend, Yoshi. This game has stood the test of time and is regarded by many as the best Mario game to date. I agree with this, as I too think this is the greatest Mario game EVER.
Gameplay
The Gameplay in Super Mario World is the same as any other Mario game, Running, Jumping, and taking down enemies, except there is one enormous difference, and it's name is Yoshi. Riding on Yoshi's back you are able to controll Yoshi and use it swallow enemies whole or take them into your mouth and spit them out. Koopa shells can be used in different ways depending on which color shell Yoshi gets in it's mouth. Green shells are spit out the same way Mario would throw a shell at an enemy. Red shells are spit out as fire. And Purple shells make Yoshi grow wings and fly! Yoshi is an amazing addition to the Mario team.
This game uses the same map interface as Super Mario 3, but with far more secrets. As Mario a new spin-jump move has been added which is very useful for breaking blocks underneath. Also, the new feather which gives Mario a cape, is fantastic. It can be used for flying! You can soar the skies with this cape, and in the skies lie some of the secrets. The game also features many boss battles from the Koopa kids, Reznovs, and Bowser.
Story
The story behind this game is clever and similar to the other Mario story-lines but is interesting nonetheless. I mean sure bowser has captured the Princess for like the 3rd time, but this storyline adds the story of Yoshi. Yoshi is a dinosaur on a mission to rescue baby dinosaur eggs from the evil Koopa kids who invaded the once peaceful island. Yoshi's story plus Mario's story is a recipie for a fun game. The game dosen't explain much to you except it is easily interpreted. Another (semi) original story from the folks at Nintendo.
Music
The music in this game is iconic. Every level gives you a sweet track to Goomba-Jump some enemies to. I found myself replaying levels not only for the content but because the music can put you in such a great mood. The Overworld Theme is the most recognizable Track from the game so give it a listen. When music sets the mood, this game's music will leave you smiling.
Graphics
The graphics in this game are unbelievable. This game is an example of 16-Bit graphics at their finest. For the technology they had at the time, these graphics were ahead of the game.
Lasting Appeal
This game is fun to play alone or with a friend. I've beaten this game many times and still enjoy it. There are so many secret levels to find this game will keep you coming back. There is no other features then the story mode, however the story mode itself is enough. And when the day is done you can always pick up a copy of the sequel!
Overall
Super Mario World is one of my favorite games of all time and definitely one of the best games for the Super Nintendo. It is well worth the $10-$15 it costs on ebay. So if you don't already own a copy pick one up!
